Yes, I'm well aware it's Tuesday. I figured you couldn't handle all the awesome things going on in Mayfair Monday morning so for your health and well-being I decided to delay it a day. See? I truly care about you people. Now let me help you stir your coffee you delicate creature....

Just a friendly reminder that Valentine's Day is less than a month away. Now whether you subscribe to the school of thought that Valentine's is a Hallmark holiday created to push a capitalist agenda in the post-holiday slump or it's the day you anxiously await the arrival of flowers, candy, and that ring you've been waiting for (OMG! Lester didn't propose at Christmas or NYE. I HATE him! OMG!! Unless he's waiting for Valentine's Day! OMG! I LOVE him!! Squeee!!!) you can find all your Heart Day goodies on the Ave.

So I'm having a serious issue writing this week's blog posts. I can't really pinpoint why besides the fact that I'm probably hungover. Plus my husband is hogging the computer. He's all like "I have work to do cause I'm a teacher and I need to research things and make power points to educate the youth of America ...blah ...blah...blah." And then I'm all like "This IS America and Gloria Steinem didn't die for me to not be able to write blog posts whenever I WANT. Feminists unite!!! Where's my lighter??"

So to make a long story short the "Merchant of the Week" profile might be delayed until I get my shiz together. Probably tomorrow; latest Tuesday. And to the husband I now refer to as Don Draper? You can shake your own martini's tonight...this little Betty's going OUT!

Bambi's + Beer

If you're a Bambi, love a Bambi (it's not bestiality--promise!),want to support a Bambi or you just want to get a good load on, pretty much every bar in Mayfair is hosting a celebrity bartending event this weekend. However, I'm only going to promote the ones that are in the MBA because that's what I get paid the big buckaroos to do. See non-members? This is one of the many benefits of being a member of the MBA!! Join today or suffer the lack of advertising to all 14 of my followers!!

Kate Rauchut and Rauchut's Tavern are holding a celebrity bartending event Saturday afternoon from 3 til 7. All tips will be donated to the Saint Hubert's Alum to save Saint Huberts. There are still some spots available for guest bartenders so if anyone is interested please call Kate at 215-333-3087.

Two of our most dedicated MBA members, Lisa Greco from BellaLisa Studios and Anne Marie Muldoon from Avenue Chiropractic will be celeb bartending at a non-MBA bar (traitors!!). I'll give you hint as to which bar...it shares a name with a "friendly ghost". That's all I'm saying. Lisa and Anne Marie will be there from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. Come out and support these lovely alumnae!! All tips will be donated to the St. Hubert's Alumnae Association.

Make sure you pregame all of your celeb bartending events on Saturday by stopping by tonight to The Grey Lodge Pub for the beer bomb of 120 on 1/20. Scoats is serving up a sixtel of Dogfish Head 120 IPA!

Please accept this letter on behalf of the Mayfair Business Association (“MBA”) which represents the business community of Mayfair in Northeast Philadelphia. Many of our members are graduates of Catholic schools, especially Father Judge and St. Hubert’s. Our educations from these schools provided us with the skills to become successful, and equally or maybe more importantly the values to be the sort of businesspeople who contribute back to improve the community. Both schools have been long time anchors to our neighborhood. Losing St. Hubert’s would leave a huge void.

We respectfully ask that the alumni, parents, and local community be given the opportunity to not only save St. Huberts, but to help transform it into an institution that not just survives, but thrives, and continues to produce productive and responsible citizens.

After much retrenching, if the church wishes to make a stand, our community, with its decades of Catholic heritage, is the place to do it. Let us work together to reclaim the legacy left to us by earlier generations and to preserve and improve it for future generations.

This Week in Mayfair (01/16/12)

Greetings fellow Mayfair people! I don't know about you but I am DONE with this winter already. Between this biting cold and the fact that at least one member of my family has been sick pretty much every day since Christmas I'm about ready to lose my mind. God help us if it snows because I might just go Jack Nicholson in "The Shining" on everyone. The only difference will be that I'll have better hair. Put the bat down, Wendy!

So what can you do in Mayfair to pass the winter doldrums? Grey Lodge is primed and ready to help you! They are holding their newest tradition "120 on 1/20" where they tap a sixtel of Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA every January 20th. (Nod, smile, pretend you know what that means.) Listen, I wouldn't know either if Scoats hadn't provided me with the description because honestly I know you can drink beer out of the following things; bottles, cans, kegs, firkins (don't ever say this blog never taught you anything), the occasional beer ball, and if you're in a dangerous/festive mood, a funnel. So now you can add sixtel to your list and impress your friends.

So anyway here's what Scoats said exactly because honestly, it's poetic.
"Tapping a sixtel, well it's more like detonating a hop bomb. 120 Minute is Dogfish's extremely extreme IPA. 120 Minute IPA is boiled for a full two hours while being continuously hopped with high-alpha American hops, then dry-hopped daily in the fermenter for a month and aged for another month on whole-leaf hops."

Awesome! You had me at "bomb". Essentially, The Grey Lodge is allowing you to drink hopped up crack in liquid form is how I'm reading this. So the tapping/detonation is starting at 10am (a perfectly respectable hour--it's like a beer brunch); weighing in around 20% ABV (I would probably die), we expect this sixtel to last all day (and the cops will be arriving around 3 to scrape everyone off the floor and arrest any survivors--nah! just kidding! Those Grey Lodge peeps can handle their beer hop bombs). There is no cover and you pay as you go. And do us all a favor, tell you're stupid friend Mikey to stay at home...dude is a menace to society while drinking Coors Light.

Mike Perzel is still trying to help you win the PowerBall (for getting an auto insurance quote) so you can escape this god-forsaken cold and jet off to someplace warm and tropical. Kevin Boyle is Irish

This week I'm profiling the office of Representative Kevin J. Boyle and let me tell you, this is going to be a tough one for me because how do I accurately convey my sense of humor and fun without having Representative Boyle and his very intelligent staff target me for deportation? (Do you see what I did there? That's called flattery. I'll be using that a lot during this post. And please don't ask me how they would deport me! I'll probably be walking along the street one day minding by own biz and the next day I'll wake up in some shady hovel in Uzbekistan all because I made some inflammatory remarks like "OMG! Kevin Boyle isn't even Irish!!)

So as I stated previously, Kevin Boyle is totally Irish. He was born in the cottage of a sheep-shearer and a milk-maid in a little village called Skidderarinkadoo, County Limerick which everyone knows is where the smartest of the Irish come from (except for those of us Irish lucky enough to trace our ancestry back to County Tyrone where we are both smart AND hilarious). I'm totally kidding about the entire above paragraph minus the whole County Tyrone thing which is totally true. Ever hear of Irish tall tales people? Yeah, you just got schooled.

The truth? Kevin J. Boyle is a local lad born in Philadelphia whose parents are actually Irish immigrants. They will probably dislike me immensely because I have no idea what county in Ireland they are from and I used Limerick because it sounds the most Irish of them all. Kevin's parents worked as a crossing guard and a SEPTA maintenance worker to put Kevin through Cardinal Dougherty High School in Olney and LaSalle in 2002. Kevin then went on to Harvard where he hung out with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and instead of writing an award winning screenplay and doing the whole "Hollywood" thing, (Ah gaht her numba..how d'ya like dem apples?) he decided to go into the less dramatic, backstabbing, and stress-free job of politics.

Kevin was elected as the State Representative of the 172nd district in 2010 and sworn in January 2011. He currently lives in the Northeast and his office in Mayfair is located at 7518 Frankford Ave. They love being in Mayfair for the vast array of people they get to meet and help and also like sharing the same business strip with the Grey Lodge Pub. Kevin has hosted numerous community events such as the family movie night in the summer, community shredding events, and has been a very vocal critic of the proposed methadone clinic in Holmesburg. He and his staff provide several services in their offices including problems with public welfare benefits, unemployment, PennDOT, handicap placards and plates, Property Tax/Rent Rebate applications and birth/death certificates. They also offer copying, faxing and a notary service free of charge. The 2011 Property Tax/Rent Rebate applications will also be available soon so stop by to pick them up if you need them.

So stop on by and say hello to Kevin Boyle and his staff. I would too but I'll be working on building up a tolerance to chloroform and tattooing my name and address on the bottom of my foot. I hear all the cool kids are doing it and you know....just in case....

Hey Kids! I come to you today as a semi-depressed St. Hubert's alumni. As many of you know, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in it's infinite, divine, and un-questioned wisdom (*read bitter sarcastic) had decided to close this local neighborhood institution and also condense many of our local Catholic grade schools. It is more important now than ever to make sure our neighborhoods stay united and there is one thing that you can do, regardless of religious or educational upbringing, to keep our neighborhoods strong; support local businesses in Mayfair, Tacony, and Holmesburg!! Now put on your school colors and get your butt to the Avenue!! The choice to paint your face is entirely up to you but I say "GO FOR IT!!"

Me thinketh thout shall getest thine asse toeth thy Grey Lodge Pub to sample thy bounty of firkins. That's my attempt at Old English. Sucketh it.

Mike Scotese, Man on a Mission

Last time I saw Mike "Scoats" Scotese we were at the Mayfair Business Association Christmas party at The Grey Lodge. He was graciously hosting if "hosting" means running around like a chicken without a head serving his fellow business peers and not relaxing at all. He would occasionally stop to socialize, make sure everyone had enough to eat, and recommend one of the fabulous craft beers on the Grey Lodge menu. Then it was right back to work waiting tables, cleaning up, and putting in more yummy food orders so we could cram our faces with cheesesteak egg rolls. Nom nom nom. I can safely say this is probably why the man has 2 very successful business, The Grey Lodge and the Hop-Angel Brauhaus and I am a part-time, smart-assed blogger. The boy has hustle.

Scoats has been at this location since 1994 and it has been The Grey Lodge Pub since 1996. There has been a bar at 6235 Frankford Ave continuously since Labor Day 1950, which for those of you who don't know history, was a little bit after the dinosaurs stopped roaming the earth. (zing old people!)

So how does one decide "I need to run one of the Fifty Best Beer Bars by Beer Advocate Magazine in addition to receiving countless other local and national accolades"? Easy. Scoats did what most of us only dream about. Instead of accepting his fate and being chained to a cubicle desk, he decided that his talents lay elsewhere. Since he had gotten lots of experience working in bars and restaurants to pay his way through school he felt like running a bar came naturally. Now he is a beautiful, bar-owning, beer butterfly and I'm still a blogger. (This entry is ruining my self esteem but I can still alliterate like a mofo. )

Scoats resides in his finely-crafted beer manor in Tacony and loves doing business in Mayfair because "it's a real place, not a strip center in a land of strip centers". His favorite business in Mayfair is the Mayfair Shop N Bag because of their fair prices, easy to find items, and the fact that they always have plenty of cashiers. A busy man like Scoats appreciates these things!

In 2012, The Grey Lodge will be working closely with Yards and Philadelphia Brewing in order to introduce more people in the neighborhood to great beer brewed right here in the city. Scoats has been up since 6am and has already waxed his car, done a 1000 piece puzzle, solved the debt crisis, driven a bus full of children to the zoo, and led a discussion on urban gardening for the Philadelphia Horticulture Society. You've picked your nose and pretended to work for the past 2 hours while Facebook stalking your ex.

Are you surprised I didn't put the year as 2011? I promise you it will be the only time this week I don't make that mistake!!

So how was your New Years Eve or the better question might be how was your New Years DAY? In case you didn't know, your New Years Day is directly correlated to your New Year's Eve. Woke up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle your resolutions of quitting drinking, smoking and the company of loose women? Sorry, your New Years SUCKED. If you woke up having broken all your resolutions by 12:15am, smelling of an awful mixture of Soco, Jack, and bodily fluids with some girl you think is named Alicia (or was it Ashley--oh no!)? Well you my friend, are the CHAMPION of 2012. I'm not even going to mention those of you who partook in Mummery in South Philly because most likely you're still too drunk to read this. We'll talk on Thursday about how jealous I am of you and wished I could be there to do the strut.

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Mike Perzel!!!

When I first sent out an email asking the Mayfair Business Association members to answer a brief bunch of questions for me, Mike Perzel from The Perzel Agency was the very first one to answer. I then sent him several follow-up questions which AGAIN he answered even before most of the other businesses even answered the first set of questions. From what I can tell, Mike applies this same type of attitude to his business; efficient, friendly, thorough, and prompt. Either that or the rest of the business are slackers and Mike is Superman. I'm going with Superman.

Mike has been in business for 15 years on Frankford Avenue and got into selling insurance because he always enjoyed sales and providing insurance gave him an opportunity to help people. He's a graduate of Lincoln High School and although he no longer lives in the Northeast (after living here for 40 years) he still has a brother that lives in the area. All of Mike's staff at the Perzel Agency are originally from Philly and several are from the Northeast including 4 from Mayfair.

Mike is currently working on several things in his office. I've been telling you about Mike's specials over the past couple of weeks which you can read again as soon as I start typing up this weeks installment of "This Week in Mayfair". Mike also has a website at www.perzelagency.com and is also on Facebook and LinkedIn. He is particularly excited about The College Tuition Benefit which is a program that allows employees of a business to earn Free College Scholarships for their children, grandchildren, or extended family member's college tuition.

New Year's Resolutions

Not to panic you but did you hear that the world is supposedly ending in 2012? Are you ready ? Pffft. Yeah, I agree. Stupid Mayans. What do they know? If it does happen, I figure we have a good couple of months and I have better things to do than stockpile weapons, bottled water, ammo and canned goods. Besides, I'm just going to come to your house and steal what you've stockpiled while you're out at the store getting more. Sure it's not fair, but it's Darwinian theory at it's most base. You can't just leave that stuff unguarded! Shame on YOU!

Well, I figured I would make a couple of resolutions in any case to pass the time:

1. I will recruit more followers for the Mayfair Business Association blog. Seriously, I have 10 followers and one of them is me. Be my follower! I promise to try and entertain you as much as I can and keep you updated on all the good stuff that is going on in and around Mayfair. I have plenty of guns and canned peaches, I'm a benevolent leader (sort of), and I won't make you drink any Kool-Aid. I also promise to make you a part of my undead zombie army when the world ends in December 2012.

2. I will eat an entire pint of Bassett's ice cream while watching "The Biggest Loser" and resist the urge to run the entire 3 mile loop around Pennypack.

Remember I stole yours? Yeah.

5. I will stop inserting "Anchorman" movie quotes into my regular conversation.

I will join the good fight with Milt Martelack Jr., honorably bestowed "Sheriff of Mayfair" and president of the newly formed Mayfair Town Watch to fight the zombie hoards (a.k.a. drunk, unruly teenagers having keggers in the woods, neighborhood vandals, and the like). I'm not promising anything but maybe you could be knighted for your valor. Just sayin.....

7. I will pray to Jesus, Budda, Allah, etc. that the cast of The Jersey Shore are at a party with the Kardashian clan and a huge plane carrying the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Giants crashes into them and there are no survivors. (what. a. tragedy.)

8. I will become more active in my neighborhood by volunteering my time with either the Mayfair Business Association, Mayfair Civic Association, and of course Mayfair Town Watch (see above resolution). You are not allowed to complain about the state of the neighborhood if you're sitting on your butt playing "Words With Friends" all day. You may think, "What do I have to contribute?" I say " A LOT! But we won't be able to find a way to maximize your blinding and limitless talents unless we actually meet you." Come to a meeting, meet the talented, motivated and dedicated people already in these organizations and tell us all the things you tell your neighbors prior to putting up a for-sale sign. Chances are other people are going through the same crap.

Silence and apathy solve no problems and we can find a way to fix it.

Good neighborhoods are built on neighbors helping each other out.

That's what Mayfair was. That's what Mayfair is. That's what Mayfair will be.

Chills right? Ultimately I pictured myself wearing a kilt, with my face painted blue, riding a horse while saying that. I guess I'll save that for my first night on Town Watch. I'm in a glass cage of emotion! DAMMIT! One resolution down.....

I will definitely be checking into the Grey Lodge tomorrow to sing some Christmas carols with local beer writer Lew Bryson (www.lewbryson.com) from 7:30pm to 9pm. The Holmesburg Civic Association (“HCA”), Mayfair Civic Association (“MCA”), Mayfair Business Association (“MBA”) and Mayfair Community Development Corporation (“MCDC”), in response to neighborhood outrage as well as a community rally that brought hundreds to the proposed location, will hold a community meeting at Lincoln High School to address the opening of a proposed Methadone Clinic in our neighborhood at 7900 Frankford Avenue (at Decatur St.). The purpose of this meeting is to inform the Holmesburg and Mayfair communities of developments relevant to this issue.

Panelists will then address the crowd individually and take questions at the conclusion of the presentations. Invited panelists include Fred Moore, President of HCA Joe DeFelice, President of the MCA, Mike Scotese, President of the MBA, Suzann St. Marie, Executive Director of the MCDC, City Councilwoman Joan Krajewski, State Representative Kevin Boyle, State representative Michael McGeehan, State Senator Mike Stack, US Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz, 15thPolice District Captain Frank Bachmeyer, Dennis Kulp, Owner of Villa Anna Associates (the leasing agent for the property) and Carl Primavera, Attorney for The Healing Way, Inc., i.e. the proprietor of the proposed methadone clinic.[1]

The meeting will begin promptly at 6PM with opening and panelist remarks occupying the first hour and questions from the audience consuming the second hour. We recommend that the community try to arrive thirty minutes prior to the event to insure there is adequate seating as this meeting is expected to draw in over Five Hundred (500) community members.

Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run

The 3rd Annual Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run will take place on May 14th, 2011 at 8:30AM at the Abraham Lincoln High School Parking lot (Ryan Ave at Sackett St) in Mayfair. The Run, which was started three years ago by the Mayfair Business and Civic Associations as the kick-off event to their Annual May Fair, was organized to honor Police and Fire killed in the line of duty.

In the late 2000s, Philadelphia felt a significant increase in the violent deaths of their men and women in Blue; the business and civic leaders of the Mayfair community (a Northeast Philadelphia Neighborhood) felt it was their duty to honor these men and women that protect them daily. The Run alternately honors either police or fire in subsequent years. The Previous two honors were Officer Gary Skerski (in the inaugural year), who was brutally murdered responding to a call in the 15th District and Firefighter John Redmond, who succumbed fighting a fire at a South Philly church. The first two years drew 150 and 280 runners respectively.

This years honoree is Sgt. Patrick McDonald, a highway patrol motorcycle cop who was killed in the line of duty in 2008. McDonald, though not from Mayfair, carried with him the strong neighborhood values that our own residents recognize from our community. The funds raised from this event will go evenly to the Hero Thrill Show, which benefits the Children of Police and Fire killed or injured in the line of duty and to the Sgt. Patrick McDonald Scholarship fund with residual going to help rebuild the Mayfair Memorial Playground which was originally laid in memory of those that served our community.

The Run is Twenty Dollars ($20) if registered online and Twenty-Five ($25) the day of the event. This year's Prime Sponsors are the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, the Firefighters Union Local 22 and Precision Mechanical plus many more sponsors from in and outside our community. Ready or Not, It's Time for the 4th Annual Mayfair May Fair

The Mayfair Business Association is preparing for its 4th Annual Mayfair May Fair. The purpose of the May Fair is to get people onto Frankford Ave to have fun and to check out the businesses on our commercial corridor. The May Fair started off with the just the name Mayfair May Fair and we've been building from that for three years. Last year, with the assistance from Donny Smith in adding live music, the May Fair really started to take shape.

Here are some of the things going on this year:

- The Pretzel Factory, one several world class businesses on the Avenue, will continue to held their epic annual street fair as part the May Fair. They will feature a cheese steak pretzel eating contest (1st prize $500, runner up $250), games, prizes, pony rides, face painting, moon bounce, water ice and much more.

- There will be live music from noon to 4pm (or later) on Ryan Ave outside Pat's Music. Live performances by: Mike LeCompt, A.J. Slick, Boss Hydro, Static Lounge and Grafenberg. With acoustic sets by Mike McCullough, and T&N

- The 15th District Police Advisory Committee is once again holding their annual Community Day during the May Fair at the Cottman and Frankford Triangle.

- Numerous merchants will be holding sidewalk sales all along Frankford Ave from Harbison to Rhawn Street, and on with the 3500 block of Cottman Ave.

- Are you Sponge Boy worthy? Mayfair Shop n Bag will be giving away Dietz & Watson's Hot Dogs, Ice Tea/Lemonade, bottled water, Herr's & Utz snacks, fresh baked cookies and pastries, Phila. water ice and more. All while supplies last. There will also be music and the character Sponge Boy (not Sponge BOB) for the kids giving out balloons and posing for pictures. (11:00 am till 2:00 pm, maybe till 3:00 depending on how long supplies last)

- Frusco's Steaks will have live entertainment along with the return of the 59 Cadillac art car for the kids to chalk on.

- Bow Wow Meow Pet Mobile will be parked on the side of Prudential Prime Realty to conduct the best dressed pet contest. 3 awards to be given out.

- See-Saw Day Care invites families to a Tot Lot with lots of activities for kids. Bring your tricycles to the See-Saw Daycare parking lot at 7425 Frankford Avenue. They will have free helmets and fitting for the first 50 kids (ages 2-6) with their tricycles/bicycles (generously donated by the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania). They will also have educational pamphlets for parents on how to prevent and identify head injury in kids as well as many other educational materials and local resources from CHOP. After taking a spin around the parking lot, be sure to make a pit stop where the Optimists Club of Mayfair will sponsor fingerprinting for all kids.

- Stan's Health Food will be holding a Health Fair.

- We are working on setting up an Art Fair outside the Devon Theater. If you are an artist who like to participate, please contact us at scoats@greylodge.com.

- Need a breather from all that? Catch the Phillies, it's a day game, at The Grey Lodge Pub. Free hot dogs to anyone sporting Phillie's gear. Give-aways, including Yuengling shirts, and a pair of Phillies tickets! $3 Chesterfield Ale pints, $1 Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer pints.

- At 8pm, The Grey Lodge closes the Mayfair May Fair with Tubthumping with Tub Gin. Perform percussion on your own homemade instruments, such as tubs, to win prizes. There will probably be a real band too to fill in between contestants, and to play that eponymous song.

It’s Never Too Early To Think About Your Future

Format:
On Thursday April 14, 2011 from 8:00AM-1:00PM the Student Success Center will host its 1st Career Day at Abraham Lincoln High School. The purpose of this event is to give students career exposure to several career paths and engage students in understanding the importance of post-secondary career planning. Speakers will rotate through different classrooms to discuss their careers with students. ROTC members will escort speakers to their respective classrooms throughout the day. Speakers will conduct 5 to 7 minute presentations in the classroom and they will be provided an outline that indicates key points to address.

Pre-career Day Procedures:
Using the Career Day Reply Form sent to each contact, perspective participants will confirm their participation for April 14, 2011. Prior to the event, participants will receive an email with an outline that provides key points to address and a copy of the student evaluation form to review.

Career Day Schedule:
8:00-9:00- Speakers will arrive and are provided a continental breakfast
9:00-12:00- Speakers are escorted by Lincoln High School ROTC members to different classrooms to present to the students
12:00-1:00- Speakers are invited to the Student Success Center for a Q&A session with selected students and there will be a luncheon for all participants

This email is an update to the parades after speaking with Gary Cozens and Reese Hartey today by phone. Unless absolutely necessary we will not need to meet.

The Holiday parade as of 2010 has changed hands from the Optimist club to the Mayfair Business Association. The parade will be held on Sunday November 21st with a rain date of the following week. Gary Cozens has been a great help in mentoring through this 1st year process for us. On the phone today he cleared up the talk about the Parade of talent at the Perzel Center. The Optimist club will not hold an event as long as the parade goes on. The Optimist club has a long history with the children of this community. Their major concerns are making sure the kids get Santa and the Mrs. and the children get to display their talents from the dance schools etc.

With that said the Von Stuben day parade will continue as it always has. If they are in the need of extra help they can reach out to the MBA and Mayfair Civic Association. Both organizations are now working in sync hand and hand.

Parade of Talent and Avenue Tree LIghting is Sunday

The Mayfair-Holmesburg Parade of Talent is scheduled for this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the John M. Perzel Community Center, at 2990 St. Vincent St. The public is invited, and refreshments will be served. Smoking and alcoholic beverages are prohibited, and no outside food or drink is permitted in the building.

Meanwhile, the Mayfair Business Association will hold its annual Christmas tree trimming and lighting ceremony that same day at 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Frankford, Cottman and Ryan avenues. There will be music and hot chocolate, and children are welcome to bring non-glass ornaments to decorate the tree. Santa will light the tree at 5pm.

The community center event replaces the traditional Thanksgiving parade, at least for this year, because organizers could not afford the city's new demands to pay for sanitation and police.

The 34th annual celebration will include many of the participants who have walked along Frankford Avenue during past parades.

The highlights will be an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus and music by DJ Kris Kringle.

The Greater Kensington, Durning and Hegeman string bands will entertain the crowd, along with the Father Judge High School band and the St. Hubert dancers.

The Mayfair Business Association will sponsor children's craft activities and raffle off gift certificates.

Help support a great cause, and have some fun at the same time. SmokeEaters will host an Oktoberfest celebration in the tradition of a Beer Garden held outside in their large parking lot.

Many long tables covered in Blue and white checkered table cloths, a DJ playing "Polka" music and top 40 all day. Bratwurst, German sausage, hot dogs and sauerkraut, German potato salad, and huge Bavarian pretzels. The beer served will be Warsteiner, Becks, Lowenbrau, Budweiser, and Bud light....all supplied by SmokeEaters Pub. Penn distributors is donating 3000-5000 22oz cups, and all the signage needed plus a HUGE sign at the entrance of the Parking lot. The female employees of SmokeEaters will wear (St. Pauli Girl outfits), and will serve beer and food throughout the day.

Gift cards to local businesses be chanced off at 6pm, to raise additional funds.

Philadelphia, PA, August 27, 2009 -The Devon Theater sprouted up in the heart of Mayfair in March of 2009 (after an almost five year gestation period) thanks to the funding and support of the Mayfair CDC and Fuse Management, LLC. The Devon Theater kicks off their sure-to-please 2009-2010 inaugural season with the kooky cult classic LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, on stage September 10th-27th. In this funky fan favorite, a down and out floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an ill-tempered, mean-spirited, R&B-singing, carnivorous plant - who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite. Fertilized with a wicked score and witty lyrics from the legendary Disney songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS was one of Off-Broadway's longest running shows - proving that sometimes it is easy being green! Loosely based on the low-budget cult film by Roger Corman, LITTLE SHOP opened at the Orpheum Theatre Off-Broadway in New York City, and played more than 2,000 performances - becoming the highest grossing and third longest running musical in Off-Broadway history. The Devon invites you to turn over a new leaf by seeing this old favorite in their brand new space.

Leading off the cast of LITTLE SHOP is Michael Indeglio as hapless Seymour and Jordi Wallen as the equally unlucky Audrey. Michael is no stranger to the stage, nor to the Greater Philadelphia area. Though Michael has performed almost exclusively in New York in recent years, he has also toured nationally and internationally and actually grew up just minutes from Center City Philadelphia. Michael's tours include TITANIC (2004 International), MAME (2005/6 National), and FOREVER PLAID (2008 Canadian). His regional and New York City credits include Monsters (York Theatre), You're a Good Man Charlie Brown (Charlie Brown), Forever Plaid (Sparky), The Rocky Horror Show (Brad), The Last Five Years (Jamie), The Full Monty (Ethan), Titanic (Barrett), Pippin (Pippin), and the World Premier of Party Animals with Kathie Lee Gifford. Michael also attended The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York and created the role of Bill in the World Premier of the musical "WaistWatchers."

Jordi Wallen is a recent graduate of NYU's renowned CAP 21 Musical Theatre Program at the Tisch School of the Arts. Jordi lives in Cherry Hill, NJ, and at just 22 years old, is already a proud member of the Screen Actors Guild and an Equity Membership Candidate. She was last seen in the New Candlelight's productions of Gypsy (Agnes) and Phantom of the Opera (Fleure) and has also worked for The Bucks County Playhouse and The Braodway Theatre of Pitman. Jordi will be featured next summer in the Walnut Street Theatre's production of Fiddler on the Roof.

The supporting cast for LITTLE SHOP features talents from across the country. A native of Detroit, MI, William Scott tackles the iconic role of Audrey II (The Plant). Ever since the day he was pulled out of his 6th grade class to sing for his school's legendary alumna Diana Ross, William knew he was born to perform. He attended college at the North Carolina School of the and soon moved to New York to perform. William has been featured in The New York Times for his performance in the Off- Broadway musical, Best of Both Worlds an adaptation of Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale. He has sung back-up vocals for a number of R&B recording artists including Gladys Knight, and in 2006, William released his debut album Who's Afraid of William Scott?. As a songwriter, his work is featured in the movie Two Weeks Notice, starring Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant. In 2008, William was selected as a Top 50 finalist on the most watched television show around the world, American Idol.

Andrew Cox from Philadelphia takes on the enormous task of operating 4 different Audrey II puppets, ranging in size from hand-held to full-body (with a footprint of 45 square feet and a height reaching 7 feet tall- it is one monstrous plant puppet!). Joe Mallon, a native of Delaware County takes on the demanding role of Orin (The Dentist/All Ensemble). Joe has distinguished himself as a versatile and up-and-coming actor in the Philadelphia theatre scene. Recent local credits include: El Gallo in The Fantasticks (Kimmel Center), Drake in Honk (Theatre Horizon), Alan in Picnic (Montgomery Theater), Wachtel in KidSimple (Azuka Theatre), and Lt. Jack Ross in A Few Good Men (Ritz Theater). Joe dreamed of a career as an actor since his days at St. Joseph's Preparatory School, where he was an active member of the school's Cape and Sword Drama Society. After graduation, Mallon attended NYU, where he focused his studies on Musical Theatre in the CAP 21 Program. Mallon also studied on-screen acting at Stonestreet Film and Television Studios in NYC, and even found himself a bit part on an episode of Saturday Night Live. He then moved to Los Angeles for two years and did commercial and voiceover work, most notably for MTV. Mallon returned to the East Coast to be closer to his family. Mallon burst on to the Philadelphia theatre scene as El Gallo in the Kimmel Center's Broadway Series production of The Fantasticks, directed by Philadelphia's beloved Tony Braithwaite. Mallon has even returned to his alma mater, assistant directing for Braithwaite at St. Joe's Prep, and spends much of his time teaching.

Ayana Major Bey joins us from New York City to play Chiffon. Ayana is a recent graduate of Montclair State University, where she earned her BFA in Musical Theatre. Ayana's regional credits include: Hairspray at the Lyceum Theater (Dynamite), Our Lady of 121st Street (Inez), The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (Saint Monica/Ms. Iscariot), Elmer Gantry: The American Opera (Keeley Gospel Singer).

Tiffany Dawn Christopher joins us from Delaware to play Ronette. Tiffany is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, DC, where she majored in Communications with a minor in Theatre. Tiffany also attended Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Delaware, and has been performing since the tender age of 3. She studied dance extensively at the Jean Ferrill School of Dance and Precision Dance Center. Additionally she received her vocal training from the Golden Voice Studio. In an effort to share her love for performing, Tiffany teaches dance at Stage Lights Dance Studio. Her love for the arts has grown and thus she has been active in various performances which include: Jesus Christ Superstar, The Wiz, Into the Woods, Weber-Prianti's A Christmas Story, A Broadway Christmas, Home for the Holidays, Christmas Around the World, West Side Story, South Pacific, King and I, Broadway Fever, and BIG.

Bill Arthur returns to The Devon stage after performing as a member of the Barbershop Quartet in The Devon Summer Community Theater Production of THE MUSIC MAN. Bill is a native and resident of Mayfair attended University of the Arts. He has performed in over 100 shows with companies including THE VOGUE PLAYERS, STUDIO Y, and ENPOINTE, and has toured with American Family Theater. Bill works for the Philadelphia Department of Recreation in the performing arts office, directs for Young Performers Theater Camp, is the assistant director for the Vogue Junior Theater Group and for Father Judge High School.

The production team for LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is led by Artistic Director Michael Pickering, along with Musical Director Chris Ertelt and Choreographer Amy Pickering. The set design is courtesy of Brad Helm with lighting design by Jeff Cebula, sound design by Foster Childers, and production stage management by Veronica Aglow.

We are working with The American Red Cross and sponsoring a blood
drive on Sunday, August 23, 2009 from 09:00 AM - 02:30 PM at the John
M Perzel Community Center.

We decided to hold this blood drive by following the example of our
favorite cousin. Joanne is holding a blood drive on the same weekend
in Satellite Beach, Florida, in memory of her husband Raj. Raj
benefited from many transfusions of blood products while fighting with
leukemia. Without willing blood donors those transfusions would not
have been possible. I think we all probably know someone who has
received the life saving benefit of a blood donation.

We hope you will consider donating blood at our blood drive.

If you donate your blood you will save a life.

Maintaining an optimal blood supply is crucial. When the blood supply
level is below the optimal level (and it usually is in the summer
time) accident victims, cancer patients, premature babies, and many
other kinds of patients who need blood every day may be at risk.

Will you donate your blood to save a life?

Every 2 seconds someone in the USA needs blood. In any given year only
1 in 20 of the donor eligible USA population gives their blood.
Donated blood is the only source of blood. There is no substitute for
real human blood. If this Red Cross data holds true, we might need to
solicit as many as 800 eligible donors to realize our goal of just 40
blood donations. We won't be able to reach out to 800 people unless
you share this info with others.

Can you donate your blood to save a life?

Are you 17 years old or older? (or 16 years old with parental consent)
Do you weigh 110 pounds or more?
Are you generally in good health?

If you answered “Yes” to these three questions, then you can probably
donate blood – most people can! If you are not sure check here
http://www.redcross.org/en/eligibility or let us know and we will help
you find out.

When you choose to participate you will be agreeing to spend about an
hour of your time in the donor center. You will go through a private
and confidential registration, brief health history, and vital signs.
The actual blood donation takes less than 10 minutes. After donation
you will be able to relax for 15 minutes and enjoy some snacks and
cold beverages with our other generous blood donors.
We're sure you'll see lots family and friends while you're there.

Our goal is to collect 40 units of blood. If we are going to exceed
this goal the Red Cross needs to be prepared to accommodate all of our
