New Year's Resolutions
Well, I figured I would make a couple of resolutions in any case to pass the time:
1. I will recruit more followers for the Mayfair Business Association blog. Seriously, I have 10 followers and one of them is me. Be my follower! I promise to try and entertain you as much as I can and keep you updated on all the good stuff that is going on in and around Mayfair. I have plenty of guns and canned peaches, I'm a benevolent leader (sort of), and I won't make you drink any Kool-Aid. I also promise to make you a part of my undead zombie army when the world ends in December 2012.
2. I will eat an entire pint of Bassett's ice cream while watching "The Biggest Loser" and resist the urge to run the entire 3 mile loop around Pennypack.
3. I will subsequently also resist the urge to scour my house with bleach and a toothbrush after watching "Hoarders".
4. I promise to shop in one of the many local Mayfair business at least 3 times a week if not more. C'mon! It's really not that hard! You like pizza, groceries, getting your hair cut, beer, banks, flowers right? Of course you do. It's all on the Avenue guys. Go get it! Plus you need supplies...lots of supplies. Remember I stole yours? Yeah.
5. I will stop inserting "Anchorman" movie quotes into my regular conversation.
6. I will join the good fight with Milt Martelack Jr., honorably bestowed "Sheriff of Mayfair" and president of the newly formed Mayfair Town Watch to fight the zombie hoards (a.k.a. drunk, unruly teenagers having keggers in the woods, neighborhood vandals, and the like). I'm not promising anything but maybe you could be knighted for your valor. Just sayin.....
7. I will pray to Jesus, Budda, Allah, etc. that the cast of The Jersey Shore are at a party with the Kardashian clan and a huge plane carrying the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Giants crashes into them and there are no survivors. (what. a. tragedy.)
8. I will become more active in my neighborhood by volunteering my time with either the Mayfair Business Association, Mayfair Civic Association, and of course Mayfair Town Watch (see above resolution). You are not allowed to complain about the state of the neighborhood if you're sitting on your butt playing "Words With Friends" all day. You may think, "What do I have to contribute?" I say " A LOT! But we won't be able to find a way to maximize your blinding and limitless talents unless we actually meet you." Come to a meeting, meet the talented, motivated and dedicated people already in these organizations and tell us all the things you tell your neighbors prior to putting up a for-sale sign. Chances are other people are going through the same crap.
Silence and apathy solve no problems and we can find a way to fix it.
Good neighborhoods are built on neighbors helping each other out.
That's what Mayfair was. That's what Mayfair is. That's what Mayfair will be.
Chills right? Ultimately I pictured myself wearing a kilt, with my face painted blue, riding a horse while saying that. I guess I'll save that for my first night on Town Watch. I'm in a glass cage of emotion! DAMMIT! One resolution down.....

This Week in Mayfair (12/26/11)
So how was YOUR holiday? Mine was fabulous!! Except for that hideous sweater Aunt Gilda gave me that I'm obligated to wear in front of her just ONCE prior to turning it into my dog's new bed. I hope Loafy likes sequins.....
Need a place to grasp at the last threads of the holiday season prior to the depression taking hold? At the Grey Lodge, Scoats and staff, will be serving weekend brunch as usual on Saturday from 10am and Sunday from 11am. Why not start off the New Year with a tasty brunch and some hair of the dog?** (**Disclaimer: Grey Lodge food is dog hair free). At least you'll have something wholesome and good in your stomach considering you'll be on the liquid booze/beer diet for the remainder of the weekend. Don't deny it, stay safe out there kids, and remember to hydrate. We're not as young as we used to be and full recovery takes a good 3-4 days anymore. So expect my next post to come sometime around Thursday-ish....maybe Friday....
Mike at The Perzel Agency is still running his specials!! He's giving away a $15.00 Gas Card once a week and a $150.00 Lowes Card at the end of January (each quote will receive an entry to win). You will also receive a PA Powerball ticket just for getting a quote on auto insurance. For any member of the MBA or their employees, Mike will also give them a $5.00 gas card in addition to everything above.. However you MUST mention the Mayfair Business Association to receive the $5.00 Gas card. Make sure you look for Mike in next week's "Mayfair Merchant Profile"!
You only have a couple more days to take advantage of Freedom Credit Union's (4900 Princeton Ave) December deal!! If you didn't get what you want for Christmas you can probably buy it using this deal! FCU will give YOU $5 a month, a free debit card and free checking. For more details on this great special available through the month of December visit www.freedomcu.org.
Have a SAFE and Happy New Year!!
PAAAARTAAAAY!!

Ho! Ho! Holy Crap!--It's Almost Christmas!!
Got all your shopping done? Yeah, me neither. I have a couple more people to buy for so I'm heading the Avenue tomorrow with the kids to pick up some great stuff.
Since I will be dealing with my darling spawn all day tomorrow while Christmas shopping (I know it's insane, I'm doing it anyway) I'm going to need something to lessen my stress (i.e. forget my name). I will definitely be checking into the Grey Lodge tomorrow to sing some Christmas carols with local beer writer Lew Bryson (www.lewbryson.com) from 7:30pm to 9pm. And most likely I will be sampling ALL the Christmas beers on tap including Troegs Mad Elf, Sly Fox Christmas Ale, Great Lakes Christmas Ale, and many more. Care to join me? Of course you do!
I can't wait to see the look on my 3-year-old's face when he opens up his presents on Christmas morning and sees that I got him a signed copies of Lew's books Pennsylvania Breweries and New Jersey Breweries (which he's selling on Thursday) as well as the Grey Lodge gift cards and T-shirt. Oh, it's not a fire engine and you can't drink until you're 21? Well, Merry Christmas to Mommy then!
Don't forget, on Sunday, Christmas Day, The Grey Lodge will be open Christmas night at 8pm but just the bar only. No food. Bring enough Christmas cookies to share if you're coming.

This Week in Mayfair (12/19/11)
- Saving the environment since you're not driving all over the Philadelphia area.
- Shopping the local little haunts for unique gifts and supporting the Mayfair economy.
- Wearing skinny jeans while sipping a tall soy caramel macchiato latte with no foam and extra extra. No you are not!! Skip that. Too pretentious.
So what's the buzz around Mayfair? I'll tell you! I can't shut up about it even if i tried!
Mike at The Perzel Agency is running a special starting today (12/19/11). He's giving away a $15.00 Gas Card once a week and a $150.00 Lowes Card at the end of January (each quote will receive an entry to win). You will also receive a PA Powerball ticket just for getting a quote on auto insurance. For any member of the MBA or their employees, Mike will also give them a $5.00 gas card in addition to everything above (SWEET!). However you MUST mention the Mayfair Business Association to receive the $5.00 Gas card. I suggest that you also have to sing "We Wish you a Merry Christmas" to Mike while hopping on one foot when going in for your quote. But let's just make that our little Christmas gift to Mike Perzel for being such a generous guy during the holidays...shhhhhh!
On Thursday evening (12/22/11), Scoats and the fine people at the Grey Lodge will be singing Christmas carols with local beer writer Lew Bryson (www.lewbryson.com) from 7:30pm to 9pm. Lew, known for his deep hearty laugh, sings in his church choir. He's basically Santa if Santa was a brewery expert who can sing except he looks nothing like Santa and has no reindeer that we are aware of. Regardless, this will be a very jolly event with lots of Christmas beers on tap including Troegs Mad Elf, Sly Fox Christmas Ale, Great Lakes Christmas Ale, and many more.
And if you still need some more gifts Lew (aka Beer Santa) will be selling and signing copies of his books Pennsylvania Breweries and New Jersey Breweries. And there are always Grey Lodge gift cards and T-shirts for sale too.
On Sunday, Christmas Day, The Grey Lodge will be open Christmas night at 8pm but just the bar only. No food. So stuff your face prior to getting there to get your drink and merry on.
Remember the special that Freedom Credit Union is running until the end of December? No? You need to lay off the Christmas punch. I'll remind you. Freedom Credit Union (4900 Princeton Ave) will give YOU $5 a month, a free debit card and free checking. For more details on this great special available through the month of December visit www.freedomcu.org.
Also, Gene at Santucci's Pizza, Lisa at BellaLisa Hair Studio and Antoinette at The Torresdale Flower Shop all wanted to make sure that you know they have gift cards/certificates for anyone who needs them! So go get 'em tiger!! They like Christmas song and dance numbers too...just sayin.
Have a holly, jolly one!

Mayfair Business Association's Favorite Things (Christmas Edition)
***(Disclaimer: not in any way affiliated with the Talk-Show-Host-Who-Will-Not-Be-Named for fear of being sued. (Psst! Her name begins with O and ends with PRAH.)
Salon visits!
Heaven knows you need a mani, pedi, and highlights stat because you = hot mess. Let the professionals at Bellalisa Studios, Michele's Family Hair Care, and Sharp Decisions Hair Care handle this one.
Flowers!
Gentlemen, a word. Your ladies love flowers. They may say "Snuggle Kitten, you shouldn't have" but inside they're bragging to their stupid friends about how faaaaaabulous and sensitive you are. Stein's and Torresdale Flower Shop will hook you up with beautiful blooms all year long, Snuggle Kitten. (I hope for your sake, she doesn't call you that in front of your friends.)
An extra 10 pounds for the holidays!
Just continue the holiday food glutton fest because you have about a week until those New Years diet resolutions start and you'll be having an emotional breakdown over your vegan flaxseed salad dreaming about Frusco's steaks, the Original Soft Pretzel Factory, Gino's Pizza Cafe, Santucci's and Wawa. C'mon fat kid....live a little.
Six packs!
Let's face it, the closest you are ever getting to a six pack is at the actual Six Pack Store based on your complete lack of will power at above mentioned restaurants.
More Beer!
Ooh. Ooh. Let's stop at Rauchut's Tavern too! You know you LOVE shuffleboard. Who doesn't? Mainly communists, but that's conversation fodder for a different night.
Craft Beer and Gastro-pub fare
Well, you're all in so you might as well lay all the cards out on the table at the Grey Lodge Pub. And nothing says Christmas like rubbing your superior intellect in your friend's faces at Quizzo on Wednesday nights. Boo-yah!!
Awkward Medical Conversations
Well now that we're all liquored up, you can ask Suzann St. Marie, owner of UPIC (and one of the organizers of the Mayfair-Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade) what she does for a living. It's all medical and complicated and makes my brain hurt.
New window shades!
Mama needs all new shades for her house so she can spy inconspicuously on the neighbors. Acme Window Shade company will provide all the coverage you need, snoopy.
H.U.G.E. lawn signs
I'm talking "Happy Birthday Baby Jesus" signs that can be seen from space. You're up Aztec Signs and Sign-O-Rama; so let it be written, so let it be done!
You get a house in Mayfair, and YOU (pointing) get a house in Mayfair, and YOU (more pointing) GET A HOUSE IN MAYFAIR! (See previously posted disclaimer)
I'm buying everyone on my Christmas list a house in Mayfair from Prudential Prime Real Estate and Re-Max City and Suburban Realtors.
All types of Insurance
Well, this is awkward...Did I mention that you have to pay for all the taxes, fees, etc that go along with my house "gift" to you? NO? Oopsie! Well, the fine folks at American Insurance Agency, The Perzel Agency and State Farm Insurance will be the spoonful of sugar for that little bit of medicine.
Dolla, Dolla, Dolla bills (y'all)
AND you also need to pay the mortgage on a monthly basis for my "gift". Why are you looking at me like that? Sheesh! Nobody is ever grateful anymore! I'm giving you Santa's "Nice List" of banks and financial planners in the area; 3rd Federal Bank, Beneficial Bank, ESK Financial, First Trust, Freedom Credit Union, Republic Bank, and Viriva Credit Union. No coal in their stocking--EVER!! You're welcome.
A Fully Planned Funeral
Dark? Perhaps. But let's be honest, what do you get for the person who has everything already? Or you get it for your annoying hipster nephew who yaps constantly about the capitalist takeover of Christmas and the complete lack of originality in gift giving anymore (insert eye roll here). Robert L. Mannal Funeral Home and Lambie Funeral Home will give you those precious few minutes of silence while he sulks and ponders the irony of the whole situation.
Dental Work
Dental Work? Are you crazy? Maybe (Definitely). But who's going to take care of that crown you cracked on Aunt Betty's homemade fruit cake? Dr. Jeffrey Berger, DDS....that's who!
The Gift of Time
You say "I need more hours in the day". I say "They're at Henry's of Mayfair!" He's got a TON of hours in there. That place is covered in clocks.
A Shiny Red Bicycle
With streamers on the handle bars and a banana seat, and a basket and ooooh!! a bell!!! And a card between the spokes...oh boy! Alright, enough, we get it. Heading to Liberty Bell Bicycles....
Bike Tags?
Do you need them for a bike? Who cares! I'm getting vanity plates that say something awesome like VNTYPL8 or WHSURDD. Daley's Auto Tags will hook you up with everything you need for things with wheels!
Christmas Cards and Cute Holiday Decor
You know you need it and you need a TON of it! Giggles Gifts, Inc. and Infinity Gifts and Beyond has ALL of it. No worries. Pick me up one of those green Flyers t-shirts while you're at it. You know which ones I'm talking about.
Good Health
OMG...I'm exhausted and my back is killing me! Take me to Avenue Chiropractic...I need an adjustment and some TLC. Help!!
Worthy Causes and Civic Involvement
Get involved in your neighborhood and visit 3 of our newest elected city officials located on Frankford Ave, Kevin Boyle, Al Schmidt and Bobby Henon. Go say "Hi, congratulations, and what can I do to help?" You can also volunteer your time or make donations for two fabulous MBA organizations who have devoted themselves to helping others; Evangelical Manor and Autistic Endeavors. There is no material gift that can compare to spending time helping others. No, I'm not crying...those are melted snowflakes. Godblessuseveryone! *sniff*
Merry Christmas from all of us in the Mayfair Business Association! Hope to see you all out and about on the Avenue with full shopping bags and don't forget many of these fine businesses offer gift cards and gift certificates! Cheers!

This Week in Mayfair! (12/12/11)
Christmastime is considered one of the most magical times of the year! That magic has come to Mayfair where you can turn toys into beer! How you ask? (It's magic!) Alright, it's not really magic but you will get that magical, warm, fuzzy feeling that helping those less fortunate always brings!
The Grey Lodge Pub (6235 Frankford Ave) is helping Avenue Chiropractic continue their successful 2011 Toys for Tots drive. They are sponsoring the Toys for Beer for Toys for Tots campaign. Stop by with a new, unwrapped toy donation for kids and treat yourself the gift of a free beer (up to a $5 value).
However if beer is not your thing, feel free to just stop by Avenue Chiropractic (6233 Frankford Ave.) to drop off your Toys for Tots donation until Thursday, December 15th.
You've still got more Christmas cheer to spread around? Great! Make sure you stop by the Live Nativity at Lambie Funeral Home (parking lot of 8000 Rowland Ave) on Saturday, December 17, between 4pm and 6pm. Bring the kids for this great event featuring all sorts of animals and music from different local choirs, bands and drama clubs. A special collection will also be available for donations to the Holy Terrors S.T.A.R.S. Sports Program for children with Special Needs.
Free money is magical! Is your current bank exhibiting Scrooge-like behavior trying to charge you to access your money? Say "Bah Humbug" to them and make sure you visit Freedom Credit Union (4900 Princeton Ave) where they will give YOU $5 a month, a free debit card and free checking. For more details on this great special available through the month of December visit www.freedomcu.org. It's the gift that keeps on giving!
Hope to see you out and about spreading Christmas cheer in Mayfair!
