A Reading Garden in Holmesburg

Grab your copy of "50 Shades of Grey" or whatever other novel you're reading that passes for literature these days and head on over to Holmesburg Library's new Reading Garden at 7810 Frankford Ave. (at Hartel Avenue).

The Friends of Holmesburg Library and members of District Council 21’s Glaziers Local 252 have created a reading garden next to the library. It's a welcome and beautiful addition to the Frankford Ave. corridor!

Here's a link to Tom Waring's article in the Northeast Times along with a really nice picture of the Reading Garden.

This Week in Mayfair (05/28/12)

Coming at you live from the Jersey shore people!!! Well, geographically I'm a couple of blocks west from the actual shoreline but I can smell the beach from here. Trust me, I'm not that crazy person happily tapping out my novel on the beach (I go to the local coffee shop where people can marvel at the rainbow colors of my Mac, my designer rumpled clothing, and my witty yet obscure sticker flair). Plus, I would get sand and sunscreen in my laptop and the glare off of it would probably give me worse sunburn than I typically already get. (Thanks Anglo-Irish-Scotch-Polish ancestors, you pasty SOB's). I also have my 2 boys to look after while on the beach and while the little one isn't busy eating sand, he's probably one step away from drowning. I'm also required to focus my 4 year old's attention into something more productive than staring at the girls in bikini's in a way that he's going to have to unlearn by the time he's a legal adult or he's going to get the cops called on him. My husband is teaching him the finer points of sunglasses and the occasional lingering leer while building sandcastles. The force is strong with this one.

Since I'm heading back to Mayfair tonight (kids are staying down with the in-laws til tomorrow--YEEE-AH!) I need to know what in the holy heck is going on this week. Huh. What do you know? A blog post titled "This Week in Mayfair". How informative and brilliant (Why, thank you. You're welcome! You look lovely today. Stop it. My hair is a frizzy humid mess.).

Now that it's officially summer, Mike Perzel wants you to celebrate it with one of the great symbols of summertime and leisure--a baseball game!! Get a quote on your personal insurance (Auto, Home, Renters, Life) to be entered to win seats (Section 131, Row 5--game to be determined) at The Perzel Agency. While there, don't forget your $5.00 Wawa Gift Card. Just make sure you mention the MBA! All MBA members also qualify for a $25.00 Amazon Gift Card for getting a quote on your Business Insurance. No Purchase Necessary must be 18 years or older.

There's only a couple days left to take advantage of the MAYfair Special at Guppies Child Care Center. Any family that enrolls in the Center (7915 Frankford Ave)  for care and says that the Mayfair Business Association sent them will receive FREE registration! A $65 value! Give Melissa a call right now at (215) 624-5434.

The Grey Lodge Pub is gearing up for perhaps one of their most important weeks of the year; Philly Beer Week. As always, Quizzo is set for Wednesday night at 8pm and then the fun never stops. Check out their full calendar here but I will give you some of the highlights and not-to-miss events! On Friday, June 1 from 8am to 10:30am (time for your other grandmom to "kick the bucket") join Scoats and crew in "Occupy the HOG". What's the HOG you ask and why are we occupying it? Why it's The Hammer of Glory, the omnipotent symbol of Philly Beer Week. Like the real Occupy movement they have no focused reason as to why they are occupying other than the fact that it's making it's 2nd stop of it's daylong journey to open up the taps at the Grey Lodge Pub.  However the GL has several things going for it that the official Occupy movement didn't; they have jobs and take showers (rimshot).  After having some breakfast courtesy of the Grey Lodge get ready to protest whatever you feel like (again similiar to the Occupy movement) with protest signs courtesy of the Lodge and then climb on the Sugar House Bus to follow the HOG around all day if you like!

Visits from brewers from Chimay (4pm), Voodoo Brewers (6pm), Spring House Brewers (8pm) round out Saturday and they will be bringing with them the best of their delicious concoctions for everyone to try. Then Sunday starts at 5pm with Lew and Scoats presenting their findings from their New Jersey Brewery Trek followed by a visit from Dr. Beer, Roger Barth, a chemistry professor at West Chester University at 7pm. He teaches a course called The Chemistry of Beer (Dude. Where was this class when I was in college? I pretty much did the homework EVERY night). He wrote a book with the same title, which he will have for sale for just $25, and heard  your Dad say it's what he wants for Father's Day. Dr. Barth will also be taking and answering questions and will be performing experiments that explode (beyond awesome--take video!!) Home brewers, Dr. Barth will bring equipment to measure SRM (the nerd in me had to Google that--Standard Reference Method--system used to specify beer color) of your beer samples.Round out your night by having a beer at 8pm with Don and Wendy of Vanberg & DeWulf!.. the importers of Dupont and lots of other iconic beers. Safely head home full off beer knowledge and bask in the glory of your beer-filled weekend.

This post would not be complete without addressing the true meaning of this day; a day of memorial to those men and women who have fought and died for this country. The unselfish sacrifices our soldiers have made since the inception of this country is one of the most amazing things to me.  I personally would like to thank each and every one of you for giving yourselves up to a greater cause then yourself. I truly think most of us take for granted the freedoms that come with your sacrifices because we have known nothing else but the freedoms your deaths and sacrifices have afforded us. We never pause to think that the small things that we demand as regular ways of life in this country are huge luxuries in other countries. Whether you politically believe in the "cause" or not, these people laid down their lives and put themselves regularly in harm's way so you and I can continue to live the way we do, say the things we want to say, and go about our lives in pretty much a state of oblivion.

"What is a hero? My heroes are the young men and women who faced the issues of war and possible death, and then weighed those concerns against obligations to their country. Citizen-soldiers, who interrupted their personal and professional lives at their most formative stage, in the timeless phrase of the Confederate Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery, 'not for fame of reward, not for place of for rank, but in simple obedience to duty, as they understood it.'"
~Jim Webb, US Senator and former Secretary of the Navy.

"Where do we get guys like this the reporter asked? The answer is as simple as it is profound. You give them to us. You parents, you families, you brothers and sisters, grandparents, uncles and aunts, friends, you loan us these wonderful young people. They are the fruit of our country, raised by caring parents or a single parent, nurtured in love, and taught that Americans are supposed to have concern for the rights, freedoms and needs of not only our own citizens, but the citizens of the world ... The credit for their goodness, and their greatness, rests with all of you back home. The mothers, the fathers, husbands, wives, all of the family members, all the friends, the teachers, the preachers, scout leaders, football coaches, volunteer youth workers of all sorts, each person who had a positive impact on the lives of these young people deserves a piece of the credit."

Colonel Ron Smith, US Army, The Meridian Star, March 9, 2005

I Spell Success, M-A-Y-F-A-I-R M-A-Y F-A-I-R

One more post about the Mayfair May Fair 2012, I swear!

It could not have been more of a beautiful day or more of a success in my book. The Ave was teeming with families having a great time and enjoying all of the different events that many of the fine businesses and neighborhood organizations of Mayfair worked so hard on.

I had a great time kicking off the day at the Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run. The weather was perfect for running. I say this like I have experience with this. I don't. I hate running and I think people who do it are slightly crazy. There are probably only 3 situations in which I would actually run on purpose;  free kate spade bags, being chased by a murder/rapist/serial killer/zombies, and killer bees. Actually I have to be honest, it would really only be for the kate spade bags. The other two situations I would totally stumble myself into a corner like those annoying screaming dumb girls in horror movies and be killed/violated/skinned-and-worn-as-a-coat/eaten/stung to death. We had a fantastic turnout to honor fallen hero Firefighter Joseph Konrad, including many of his family members; Mayfair's own Trish Paffen rocked the National Anthem;  3rd Federal Bank helped with money collection (thanks to Lou and his lovely assistant!); Randy and his employees at Republic Bank helped us out in so many unseen ways this week with organizing all the pre-registrations AND donating the pretzels for the run; Mark Gilbert and Shop-N-Bag donated water and oranges; and Viriva CCU gave us all the goody bags in which to put all of that stuff! It's great Mayfair Business Association members, not to mention the countless CDC, Civic Association, Town Watch, and Mayfair Memorial Playground members all pitching in and working together to help out with an event like this that makes this community wonderful.

Then I was on to helping set up a table for my pet project (ha! it's a pun...you'll get it in a minute), the Northeast Dog Park. Everyone kept asking "Where is the dog park?". Well, technically right now it's a brilliant pie-in-the-sky idea looking for a permanent physical home but we had a lot of interest and sold some yummy home-made doggie treats at our bake sale. Our Doggie Pageant was a great success and we had a great turnout of Mayfair and Northeast dog owners willing to see if we can find a place to call our own in the Great Northeast! Many thanks to Suzann St. Marie, Executive Director of the Mayfair CDC and Milt Martelack, Jr. President of Mayfair Town Watch who served as our judges and picked a phenomenal set of dogs as the winners in 5 different categories. I'll see if i can post some pictures at some point! Additional thanks to both MBA members Prudential Prime Real Estate for allowing us to set up in front of their store and Stan's Health Foods for bringing down a bunch of dog friendly resources for us to hand out and to Megan Whalen and Mike Ennis my co-coordinators and champions for our cause!

All of Frankford Ave was buzzing with activity but nowhere more so than the Mayfair Town Watch Dunk Tank. It may have had something to do with the fact that it was set up right near the stage where all the bands were playing their hearts out for the people of Mayfair (Kudos to Donny Smith for coordinating all of the great live music for the Mayfair May Fair. It truly was the heart and soul of the day.) It could have also been the fact that all of the employees of the 15th police district were lined up to make sure that Captain Frank Bachmayer of the 15th was dunked at least 100 times. Props also to Representative Kevin Boyle and Councilman Bobby Henon for being good sports and not worrying about a little bit of water messing up their perfect politician hair (Seriously, is that part of the vetting process before you run for office? Credentials? Check. Good speaker? Check. Money? Check. Good hair? NO? Back to the drawing board!). DA Seth Williams also put in an appearance to check out the fun. Unfortunately, we couldn't convince him to get in the dunk tank but there's always next year!

Then onto the Grey Lodge Pub for Mayfair After Dark at around 6pm; good food, Mayfair Car Show, Art Show and of course the all important BEER(S). I browsed the Mayfair Car Show and pretended to know stuff about cars and talked to Mike Williams, car show coordinator and VP of the Civic Association.  I was pretty much tapped out at that point but I stuck around long enough to hear Huge Jackman, Queen Helene, and finally Sexy Sadie Band sing a couple tunes AND more importantly, I bought this
It's a snail! An awesome snail!! I love it!

at the Art Show (fabulously coordinated by Mike Ennis), came home, cuddled with my kids (who I hadn't seen in 2 days because they were down the shore--lucky!) and crawled into bed. After that heartwarming reunion scene with my hubby and adorable children, I awoke Sunday morning to a text from Mayfair Business Association Award Winner for "Mayfair Business of the Year", Lisa Greco of BellaLisa Studios, telling me that my leaving before 9:30pm was "Busch league". The me from not even 10 years ago would have agreed with her and probably called me a skank. However, I will have my revenge in the form of next week's Mayfair Merchant Profile where I will make up random facts and lies about Lisa's origin story, how she got into the beauty business and find the most hilariously horrific pictures to illustrate said story. It's on Lisa. It's ON!!

Here's a small article http://www.examiner.com/article/thousands-enjoy-may-fair-mayfair with a slideshow of some pictures of the Mayfair May Fair. I'm sure we'll have more coming in every day so make sure you are on the lookout for them! I would  love to see them and post them here so if you would like, make sure you send them into me and I will make sure to post them to the blog.

Mayfair May Fair is almost HERE!!

So awesome that I just figured out that the auto-post thing on Google wasn't working. I can't dare entertain the thought that I somehow may have screwed up...me??? NEVER!! I think that the peeps at Google and Blogger were too busy buying up Facebook stock today personally. Stupid jerks. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Here's what was supposed to have posted hours ago during prime web surfing time (i.e. during work hours).

IT'S TOMORROW!! YAY! FINALLY HERE!!!

Are you excited? As if you can't tell based on my all CAPS response, I'm as stoked as a chimney.

Here's the list of going's on again if you need it. I know you already have it memorized but it's for "the others" who haven't (who ARE you people?).

MFMF Art Show Preview

Our art will be awesome!
As mentioned about 8,000 times on the blog already this week is the fact that Saturday, May 19 is the Mayfair May Fair. We're trying to do something a little different this year in hosting the Mayfair After Dark portion down in the Devon District in front of the Grey Lodge. We're having music, good food and beer (typical for the Grey Lodge anyway), a car show, and an art show.

Here's a preview of about 5 of the artists that will be there!
