Our Newest MBA Member--L.B's Cuts!!

Welcome to our newest Mayfair Business Association member, Lou from L.B's Cuts at 3151 Levick Street. Give Lou a call at (267) 343-5307 ‎ to set up an appointment! Make sure to "Like" his Facebook page here and you can follow him on Twitter at @LBsCuts.

This Week in Mayfair (3/26/12)

Sorry kids, late post today because I was still busy recovering from the awesome time that was had by all at the 2nd Annual Friends of Mayfair Memorial Playground Easter Egg Hunt. Although the weather was a bit dicey at times, it never actually full-on poured and we had a great turnout!!

Many of our MBA members were t-shirt sponsors, gave us food/drink donations or just helped us out in general. Check out the picture below and you can see the many members who participated!
All proceeds from this event are going towards the purchase of an 8-foot fence to keep out the vandals (DON'T get me started on vandals. Trust me you don't want an entire entry dedicated to how I think taggers and vandals are the mental equivalent of dogs peeing on random objects to mark their territory. Another day perhaps.)and also the purchase of the next piece of playground equipment (an awesome rumble slide). So anyway that's my excuse and if you don't like it well, you can kindly suck it. So posh of me don't you think? HA!!

Let's explore what else is going on in this fantastical hood of neighbors called Mayfair:

Another week, another creative excuse to drink delicious beer creations at the Grey Lodge. On Friday March 30, 2012 starting at 6pm, the GL will be holding the "Abbeys, Angels, Ports and Serpents" (For the sake of my fingers and sanity let's just call it AAPS for short.) So what is AAPS all about? Why beer of course! Grey Lodge will be tapping a bunch of Port/Lost Abbey beers including 2 different Angel Shares.

On Tap will be:
Lost Abbey Deliverance
Lost Abbey Serpent Stout
Port Midnight Expressions
Lost Abbey Brandy-Barrel Angel Share
Lost Abbey Bourbon-Barrel Angel Share
Port Brewing Older Viscosity
and one or two Port IPAs

And what is a Grey Lodge event without a crazy little contest? Do you happen to look like this guy?

This is Tomme Arthur, co-founder of Port/Lost Abbey. If you do or happen to know someone who looks like him drag yourself to the Grey Lodge around 8pm for a look-alike contest!! Prize? Not sure....maybe bragging rights and a couple of free brews? (don't quote me on that!!!)

While at the Grey Lodge celebrating AAPS on Friday stick around for their "Meet the Author" series starting at 6:30pm (you're already there drinking beer...might as well get your well-rounded literary on!). Local author Brady Russell will be joining and mingling. He just released a book, Dream Her Back: Two Novellas from Pittsburg, Kansas, in Kindle format. Look at you! All growns up and cultured-like!! Sipping on religious-themed beer and meeting authors. Pretty soon you'll be sipping wine and discussing the Philadelphia Art Museum's upcoming feature "Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse: Visions of Arcadia" and the opening of the Barnes Foundation's new Philadelphia location! (April 20th fellow art nerds) Leave your beret at home...that's just overkill.

Well now that you're confident and cultured to the tips of your toes you can stop by Torresdale Flowers to win that jelly bean contest! It's easy. Get to the store and guess how many jelly beans are in the jar. The winner, announced on April 7th, gets a $50 gift card to use in the store. Get started early on your Easter candy shopping too because they are stocked with Asher's Chocolates for all your candy needs. GO!! What are you waiting for!!!??

Viriva CCU, the very definition of urbane and polished wants to increase your cultural relativity by giving away an iPad 2. Hello? Who doesn't want an iPad 2?? Sophisticated people like you of course! For all the details click here.

Speaking of cultured, Mike Perzel has been waiting like a gentleman for you to drop in and get a quote on your personal insurance (Auto, Home, Renters, Life) at the Perzel Agency. While there, don't forget your $5.00 Wawa Gift Card and be entered to win 2 PHILLIES TICKETS; great seats Section 131, Row 5 (game to be determined). No Purchase Necessary must be 18 years or older. Just make sure you mention the MBA! All MBA members also qualify for a $25.00 Amazon Gift Card for getting a quote on your Business Insurance.

Now get yourself out there to do ALL of the above lest your definition of "high class" be similar to this guy's.

This Week in Mayfair (3/19/12)

Hot damn! I think it's officially safe to say that spring is here. This weather has been just gorgeous recently, all the daffodils are out and the tulips in my garden are starting to pop up. I'm also starting to see that soft dusting of spring green in Pennypack where all the little leaf buds are starting to crack open. I love it!

So of course this weekend I decided to wear cutie sandals and flip-flops give my feet a break from boots and heavy shoes. Guys, let me clue you in...as soon as the warm weather starts there is only one thing on your lady's mind---PEDIS!! Alright, maybe they aren't as superficial as me and think of more than that (babies, puppies, and the horrible humanitarian crisis in Syria--Deep. She's a keeper). But I swear, as soon as the thermometer hit's 65 on a regular basis, I'm on the phone to my friend Denise making a pedicure appointment so we can relax, read trashy gossip magazines, and get made fun of to our faces while not understanding a word of what the nail salon girls are saying. Where's Frank Costanza when you need him?? Ah never mind, I'll just call Lisa and the girls at BellaLisa Hair Studios for some pampering instead. Lisa would never allow this:

Since I've determined I'm going to go full-throttle girlie-girl this week, I might as well stop in to see Antoniette at Torresdale Flowers to pick myself up a lovely bouquet that I can carry around like the reigning Ms. America. (Duh, of COURSE I have a tiara. How dare you ask me that, peasant!) Plus they are hosting a jelly bean contest. Get to the store and guess how many jelly beans are in the jar. The winner, announced on April 7th, gets a $50 gift card to use in the store. And they have Asher's Easter Chocolates. Everyone knows girls love chocolate. Done!

After last week's craziness at the Grey Lodge, Scoats and clan are taking it easy this week (read: still recovering from the Irish Flu). Quizzo is the only thing on the calendar on Wednesday at 8pm. No need to drink this week since you did enough of that this weekend and oh, pretty much all of last week. Use the $25 bar tab prize to order some food, you lushy mess.

Mike Perzel is back from vacation (what is this with EVERYONE going on vaca without me?) and is base-tanned and ready to give you a quote on your personal insurance (Auto, Home, Renters, Life) at the Perzel Agency. Make sure you get that $5.00 Wawa Gift Card and be entered to win 2 PHILLIES TICKETS; great seats Section 131, Row 5 (game to be determined). No Purchase Neccessary must be 18 years or older. Just make sure you mention the glorious and fabulous MBA! All MBA members also qualify for a $25.00 Amazon Gift Card for getting a quote on your Business Insurance.

Speaking of spring and green, Viriva CCU is still giving away an iPad 2 so make sure you spring (ha! a pun! how gauche.) on over there and get yourself entered. For all the details click here.

For a real taste of spring, mark your calendars for this Saturday, March 24th from noon-2pm. The Friends of Mayfair Memorial Playground are holding their 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt at the playground in front of Lincoln High School. For $2.00, kids ages 0-8 can get goodie bags, buy treats at the bake sale (featuring Stock's Loaf Cakes for sale--YUM!), take pictures with the Easter Bunny and dance with the DJ! Such a great family and community event--don't miss it!!!

Also, don't forget, that the Mayfair Civic Association is holding it's monthly meeting Monday, March 19th at 7:00pm. Lots of information will be given out about everything that's happening in the neighborhood from the local candidates running for office, a methadone clinic update, zoning, and the Mayfair Dog Park. I hear the Recording Secretary is pretty cool. Apparently she looks a lot like me too...I really should introduce myself. Hopefully it's not one of those situations where you meet your twin resulting in a rip in the fabric of the space time continuum. (Back in your hole nerd, I'm a beauty queen this week!! My wrist is really starting to hurt from all this royal waving).

Chainsaws = AWESOME

Alright, here is the commercial that Mike Perzel busted the bank over. He used Fivver.com and I must say, it's worth every penny he paid for it.

Watch the madness unfold here.

Watch Mike's other commercials on his YouTube channel here as well.

I'll be on Fivver for the next 3 hours choosing which ones I want to use for the next bunch of birthday's, anniversaries and holiday's.

Even More Shuttle Pics...

I don't know who the guy giving the thumbs up in this picture is but he cracks me up and I want to be his friend.

Guessing I might be able to find him at Coach's.

Seriously. Hilarious. Rivaled only by this group of guys....

Thanks again to John Leong for all of these great shots! He really captured the fun spirit of the day!

This Week in Mayfair (03-12-12)

Wednesday is 3/14.
Pi=3.14.
Therefore Wednesday is Pi(e) Day at The Grey Lodge.

What's Pi(e) day you ask? Could it possibly be as awesome as you are currently imagining? Covered in whipped cream and maybe a huge scoop of melting vanilla ice cream? OMG....PIE!!! Yup. Those creative culinary connoisseurs at the Grey Lodge have poured all of their love into a buttery, flaky crust and baked it up especially for you and served into a 3 course pie dinner. I mean honestly, is there anything better than pie? DON'T say cake, comrade. Cake has Bastille Day (at least in Philly). No one ever lost their pretty Austrian head over pie. Also, at 7:30pm at the Grey Lodge after you have sufficiently gorged yourself silly on pie dinner you can then show how ridiculously intelligent you actually are. (Please. Your mother won't shut up about it and her friends roll their eyes behind her back because of that ONE TIME you got your hand stuck in the tailpipe of the car.) Time to redeem the woman who gave you life and win the prize for reciting Pi to the most places correctly. You can Google it and start memorizing, Einstein. And while you're at it stick around for Quizzo at 8pm to continue you cerebral domination over the entire human race.

Yards Brewing will be there too bringing with them Yards Entire Porter, Bourbon Love Stout, Chocolate Love Stout (just had one over this past weekend--YUM!), Yards Brawler gravity pour firkin (I think I'm going to name my next dog Firkin), and Yards ESA.

In my complete excitement about Pi(e) day I neglected Tuesday at the Grey Lodge. The Lucky 13 Home Brew Club is meeting at 7:30pm. I'm sure you can bug Scoats about getting a preview of the pies they'll be serving up. If not, you can sample some home brews by members. Speaking of, you have to be a member to sample. You can't just randomly show up and start throwing back samples. I tried and am currently banished. Brew Club Bullies.

Of course, St. Patrick's Day is Saturday which means The Grey Lodge is closed because everyone will be in church praying all day and no one will be partaking in that evil spirit liquor...HAHAHHAAHA! That was about as long as I could do that with a straight face. OF COURSE The Grey Lodge is open on St. Patrick's Day. Look elsewhere for green beer but there will be plenty of Irish whiskey (even hard to find ones), Irish beer and Irish food specials (which is basically soda bread floating in whiskey served in a hollowed out potato--what? It's a national dish!!)

The always fabulous Antoniette and the Torresdale Flower Shop are hosting a jelly bean contest. Stop into the store and guess how many jelly beans are in the jar. The winner, announced on April 7th, gets a $50 gift card to use in the store. My guess is 789. If you guess that I'm not above cutting you. Also, Torresdale Flower Shop has a great selection of Asher's Easter Chocolates so while you're there guessing pick some up, you know, "for the kids".

Mike Perzel at The Perzel Agency sent me the most fabulous commercial that he funded with his very own money that he's actually getting his own personal post highlighting it. So stay tuned to for Mike's commercial and his specials for this week coming soon!

Did you see Acme Window Shade & Blind Company now has online ordering? NO??? Well, check it out here and be amazed at their beautiful work now available from the comfort of your own computer chair (in my case, my ugly couch). If you've been cooped up all winter staring at your horrific old window treatments it is now time to spring clean those suckers into the trash and get new ones. I'm going to tell my husband the kids set mine on fire or some ridiculously elaborate lie to explain why mine are gone and I have new ones courtesy of Acme. Shhhh...don't tell!

And finally, Viriva CCU, our Merchant Profile from last week will also be getting their own post about their going green with their e-services--it involves entering to win an Apple IPad 2--that's all I'm saying for now, you'll just have to stay tuned! All these fabulous businesses with great news to share get their own posts! Keep them coming guys!!

Just a friendly community reminder that the next Mayfair Civic Association meeting will be held Monday, 3/19/12, 7:00pm at the Mayfair Community Center. Be there and be heard. We need people to step up and be involved! Almost a full 2 day recovery from St. Paddy's Day...no excuses.

Some wonderful news from Cindy at Acme Window Shades, purveyors of the finest shades and window treatments around! They are very excited to announce that they now offer a shop online service. A sample of their great work is pictured above and they have a gallery on their website too. Check it out!

Just log onto www.acmeshade.com and look for the shopping cart!

More Shamrock Shuttle Pics!

Of course there are more so keep stopping back! Again a huge thanks to photographer John Leong for all of these images. Also don't forget about Quizzo at the Grey Lodge tomorrow at 8!!

This Week in Mayfair (03/05/12)

Ah, March. You bring so many wonderful things to Mayfair. Spring, bunnies, flowers and bar crawls. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the good people of Mayfair have survived the storm of the Shamrock Shuttle. Brace for the Erin Express next weekend. But honestly, the worst is over at this point (we hope).

Luckily, I got to experience this alcohol soaked, mayhem first-hand. I was wearing my Mayfair Town Watch hat that day patrolling like the good and responsible citizen-soldier that I am with my fellow Town Watchers. In a previous post, I had said that my first time on town watch I would dress like William Wallace from "Braveheart". Remember that? Of course you do, my little stalkers. You remember every word I write. Well, I would sadly like to report that I didn't dress like William Wallace (kilt was in the cleaners and he's Scottish. Inappropriate.) however, I would not have been out of place at all or probably not even given a sideways glance from some of the revelers. Let's pretend for a moment that we were aliens visiting Mayfair from outer space observing the Shamrock Shuttle to gain a better understanding of the customs of St. Patrick's Day. This would be my list:

1. Consume mass quantities of alcohol and cigarettes cause damn, you're 22, you don't get hungover (yet) and you and your lungs are invincible. Plus, you need something to suppress the appetite because all you have in your stomach is Red Bull. OMG! Let's do shots of WHISKEY!! **projectile vomit on your best friend and the ground in front of you**

2. Why pay to participate in Shuttle revelry when you can park your car along Frankford Ave, put a cooler filled with beer in your trunk, and dress your obviously black-Irish dog in a Kensington Irish t-shirt (someone call the SPCA), and then proceed to hit on every drunk lassie that comments on your puppy? Everyone knows dogs are drunk-girl kryptonite. Pure genius.

3. Alcohol makes you think you can dart across traffic in front of cars and you'll win. Seriously, it was like watching live-action "Frogger". Everyone was in green and at least one little froggy lost. I wish you a quick recovery, poor silly boy-froggy.

4. Traditional Irish garb consists of anything and everything green in the following forms (and most likely all on one girl); booty shorts, suspenders, a half-top, a corset top with the laces in green, orange and white (duh), knee-high green and white stockings, hooker heels, kilts, feather boas, green tutus, shirts with traditional, witty Irish sayings like "Drunk 1", "Irish Today, Hungover Tomorrow" and "Leprechauns Made Me Do It". Praise St. Patrick that it was a little bit colder because I was waiting to see Shamrock pasties on someone. Ooh wait, I should sell those next year. MY idea, cretins! I call intellectual property rights!!!

Soak these Shuttle images in my wild Irish roses while listening to this song. Just not at work, you'll probably get fired.

It was an event that would have James Joyce, William Butler Yeats, St. Patrick, and all of our Irish ancestors who came here to avoid starvation and oppression, weep for the future. Oscar Wilde, on the other hand, would have been all over that sh*t and probably sporting shamrock pasties himself. That being said, it was highly entertaining people-watching and for the most part was a relatively calm event. Most people were cooperative, out to have a good time, and were overall respectful. Many thanks and kudos need to be given to Joe DeFelice and the members of the Mayfair Civic Association for coordinating a plan with several of the participating bar owners (including MBA member Hammerheads), Milt Martelack, president of the Mayfair Town Watch and the Town Watch members who patrolled the area, and Captain Frank Bachmayer and the officers of the 15th Police District for their presence and cooperation. Big thanks also to photographer John Leong for all the images of the Shuttle featured on today's site. I'll be bringing you some more choice little tidbits throughout the week so stay tuned for more green debauchery.

So now that I'm done paying homage to the Shuttle what else is going on in the fine neighborhood? As usual, Scoats and the good people of The Grey Lodge Pub are hosting Quizzo on Wednesday night at 8pm. I won't be able to go because I'll be too busy working on a prototype pastie so you go.....my absence will guarantee your victory. Enjoy it because I'll be back with a vengeance next week.

I'm not sure if Mike Perzel is Irish but you know what? Everyone's Irish when you wear green during the month of March! Test your Irish luck by getting a quote on your personal insurance at the Perzel Agency; Auto, Home, Renters, Life. You'll also receive a $5.00 Wawa Gift Card and here's where the real luck part come in; you will also be entered to win 2 PHILLIES TICKETS; great seats Section 131, Row 5 (game to be determined). No Purchase Neccessary must be 18 years or older. Just make sure you mention the MBA! All MBA members also qualify for a $25.00 Amazon Gift Card for getting a quote on your Business Insurance.

I would like to wish a very special 13th anniversary to BellaLisa Hair Studios. 13 years old! Congratulations to Lisa Greco and her staff on reaching this milestone. Unfortunately, BellaLisa is currently grounded for missing her curfew (i wuz @Carrie's house), going over her texting limits (tbh, u suck), and mouthing off to her mother (;P). She's sulking it out in her room, trying on different eye make-up, dreaming about dating that boy her parent's hate, and wishing her braces were gone (and her parents, duh. H8 them!!! gawd!!).

Our featured Mayfair Merchant, Viriva Community Credit Union is spreading the good Irish cheer with their Loan Rate Discount Program that includes a discount for new members. Here's another picture before I go. HA! His mother must be so proud. *sigh*
